The Confederate Cottage sits on the Atlantic Ocean in one of the most beautiful and historically significant areas on the East coast. During the War Between the States, the Northern Blockade of Southern ports became more and more effective. With the construction of Fort Fisher and the various other fortifications in the Cape Fear River Defense System, the Port of Wilmington became the most important seaport in the South. With the Wilmington & Weldon Rail Road going directly to Richmond, almost all supplies for the Confederate Capitol and for Lee's Army of Northern Virginia came through Wilmington. It was this supply line that kept the South alive until the end of the war. During the finial attack on Fort Fisher in mid January, 1865 a Union Armada of 58 warships mounting over 600 heavy guns fired over 50,000 shells at the fort and areas north of the fort where the Confederates had smaller gun emplacements. The Union then landed more than 10,000 solders, marines, and sailors to launch an assault on Fort Fisher. When the massive land assault began, the 1600 men and boys inside Fort Fisher were soon overwhelmed by thousands of onrushing federal troops. This was the largest land & sea assault ever to take place in North America. Within 30 days of the fall of Fort Fisher, Wilmington fell and within 60 more days Lee surrendered his army in Virginia.
